DMADV: A Six Sigma Fundamental To Help You With Your Design

DMADV: A Six Sigma Fundamental To Help You With Your Design

Since it was introduced by Motorola in 1986, the Six Sigma methodology created an image of improving business strategies worldwide. It’s basic aim, to limit defects up to at least 3.4 every million opportunities is really something worth considering. However, the Six Sigma strategy involves two methods: the DMAIC and the DMADV. For improving an existing business management strategy, you ought to use the DMAIC method. To make sure that you are making the right design for a prospected product or service on the other hand, the DMADV method is what you need to use.

DMADV is an acronym which means to Define, Measure, Analyze, Design and then Verify.

To guarantee that you’ll end up with a design that would satisfy not only your prospected customers, but your image as well. Following the DMADV method is simple. All you need to do is literally apply the definition of the acronyms. What we’ll do here is to elaborate the meaning of DMADV in general.

Define: As an executive term, define means to identify your specific goal related to the project. List down the objectives, what you wish to happen or your expectations and so forth. How do you plan to execute your design making and ideas? When you’ve laid out all of these, then you can proceed to the next step.

Measure: What the team should do next is to measure. Measure here means to identify strategies that could work in creating the design of your product. During this phase you can include in existing strategies that might come applicable to your requirements. Collect all the data regarding this phase, so that you’ll have something to compare when improvements are made.

Analyze: This step allows you to analyze the causality of the factors, and the relationship between it, during the process: Advantages, disadvantages, errors, defects, and how to improve or solve it.

Design: This is where the preliminary design idea the team has is reevaluated after all the analysis and see whether it is achievable and whether it still needs more upgrades. Everything then is applied until the product is made.

Verify: The end product is then tested. Verify simply means to observe if the product achieves its purpose. Does it satisfy both the team and the consumer’s expectation? If it does, then it’s almost on its way to be marketed.

The design then is presented to the CEO and the quality control staff. After it gets approved, it then proceeds to be mass produced and be sold to the market. For better improvements after awhile, the company can now adopt the other Six Sigma method which is the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control). This method is used to again evaluate how the product is doing, if it needs enhancements, and what the consumers are saying about it. Changes can be applied, or another product can be developed to follow up with the sales and production. If you can observe, the changes are quite similar with the previous method, and was only replaced on the last two steps which is to Improve, and Control the changes made for the product.

With these methods, you’re guaranteed to produce only quality product designs that will surely satisfy your target consumers.
